Statement On The Announced Agreement On The Affordable Housing Package By The New York State Senate And Assembly
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 12th, 2019
In response to the announced agreement on an omnibus rent package by the New York State Senate and New York State Assembly, Empire State Indivisible had this to say:
“The countless volunteer hours spent working to defeat the IDC in last year’s primary, then flip the state Senate from red to blue in the general election were always about delivering a fairer, kinder and more equitable New York — one that will make our state a leader in creating solutions for the most pressing issues that affect all New Yorkers. When we canvassed last year throughout the city and upstate, the need for tenant protections and rent affordability always came up.
Last night’s announcement, on the package of rent laws, was a great step towards this vision and we applaud the Assembly and Senate for creating solutions that will make a considerable difference in the lives of many communities across our state. We now call upon the Governor to support the package without delay.
We also want to thank the coalition of advocacy organizations, tenant associations and volunteers that have once again shown the strength of people powered organizing. The Housing Justice For All coalition has been an inspirational model for the role of activism to unite our state and deliver true progress. We thank the elected officials that engaged with the coalition — their support enabled their constituencies to have a voice in this process. We are honored to have played a small role in this historic achievement.”
Empire State Indivisible is part of the national Indivisible movement and the True Blue NY Grassroots Coalition. We are committed to defend New York against the Trump administration and those who enable its policies.
