NY Grassroots Letter To Congressman Nadler Urging Impeachment Inquiry
Dear Congressman Jerrold Nadler,
We write to express our deep concern with House Democratic leadership’s response to the Mueller report and express our fervent support for your reported attempts to proceed with an impeachment inquiry behind closed doors. We support and urge your use of the full scope of the Judiciary Committee’s constitutional power to hold the President accountable.
As Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, you have the power to ensure Congress exercises its constitutional obligation to hold President Trump accountable. As Democratic leadership continues to urge a “wait and see” approach for political calculations, the President’s actions have only escalated. Instead of leading, your colleagues have asked us to wait — wait for the Mueller report, wait for the unredacted Mueller report, wait for Mueller’s testimony about the Mueller report, wait for more investigations, wait for bipartisan consensus, wait for impeachment to poll better.
But with 10 distinct episodes of obstruction of justice already documented in the Mueller report, continuing violations of the emoluments clause and the Trump administration now defying subpoenas for both documents and testimony, waiting is not the answer. The American people deserve leaders willing to do their constitutional duty to rein in the Trump administration and defend our communities. You have stated that there is sufficient evidence of obstruction of justice and that there is sufficient justification for impeachment. That can only lead us to conclude that it is time to launch an impeachment inquiry now.
There’s still a chance to change course. Reports of your advocacy behind closed doors to move forward with impeachment proceedings is a good first step. But it’s time to bring those arguments into the light of day, and we are here to support you in that endeavor. You are a powerful, respected leader who has stood up for the rule of law throughout your entire career. New Yorkers know this, and it is why we as part of the nationwide grassroots movement worked so hard to flip the House to empower you as Chair of the Judiciary Committee. We knew we were going to need a fighter, and we have been counting on you to stay true to your New York values and deliver.
Your leadership can position the House to be the body that exposes the corruption and moral abhorrence of the Trump White House, proves that no president is above the law, and persuades Americans that this president must be removed from office. By launching an impeachment inquiry, you can help expose Trump’s defenders and enablers, including those in the Senate, as craven partisans willing to destroy our democracy in order to give tax breaks to their billionaire benefactors and stack the federal courts to defend their white, male privilege.
In the very near future, the Trump era will be one that evokes the question — what did you do to protect American Democracy from authoritarianism? We know we are doing our part. We urge you to do the same, use your power to lead and urge your caucus to stop asking us to wait.
